Applications being accepted for Berl Olswanger Memorial Music Scholarship

Edna and Berl OlswangerApplications are currently being accepted for the Berl Olswanger Memorial Music Scholarship Fund for the 2010-2011 academic year. The fund was created in 1981 in memory of Berl Olswanger, a beloved member of Second Presbyterian Church.

The scholarship is awarded to one or more qualified Christian students majoring in music with preference given to members of Second Presbyterian Church.

Special considerations are given to students planning to or attending a Memphis college or university, or to those who, while on scholarship, are willing to participate in Christian music endeavors within the church or elsewhere.

Katie Neal, a past recipient of the Berl Olswanger Scholarship Fund, completed her Bachelor of Arts in Music degree from Union University. She shares, “I was truly blessed and honored to receive the Berl Olswanger Scholarship in 2001. Upon much prayer, it helped confirm that God was indeed calling me to major in music. Since then, I have used the musical gifts that God has given me for His glory by playing piano at my church and teaching over twenty piano students. I cannot even begin to express my appreciation for being granted the Berl Olswanger Scholarship! Thank you so much!”

The scholarship selection process is initiated by representatives from the Chapel Class, where Berl and his wife, Edna, were members, the Music Department, and the Grants & Scholarships Committee of the Foundation.

The application deadline for consideration of this scholarship is February 10th. Please submit a resume, including GPA; a brief description of your plan of study and long term music goals; and two letters of recommendation to the attention of Vicki Simmons in the Foundation office. For more information or 454-0034, ext 193.

The Foundation is able to accept additional donations to the Berl Olswanger Memorial Music Scholarship Fund.
